making progress as an adult child of an alcoholic

Are you actually healing?

Are you healing from healing being an adult child of an alcoholic? How do you know if you are making progress in healing from the effects of being an adult child of an alcoholic?

I’ve been on this adult child of an alcoholic healing journey for about 9 years. People often ask me how I know I am making progress. The truth about healing is that some days, I feel like I am thinking/behaving exactly as I did as a child and young adult. However, I know I have made major strides because when I read through my diaries and journals, I am stunned.

I hardly recognize the person I was back then, especially just as I began my healing journey. I have also tracked my progress by how much I have embraced the realization that my only job in life to take good care of me. This was a difficult fact to believe. Now I remind myself of this fact every day and it helps guide my healthy decision making.

I hope you are well in journey.
